Engineer Tamara bought her skirt from a traditional Russian fashion store in Moscow. Tamara was looking for a clothes alterations shop, when I spotted her folk-style mix of muted colour hues.

London – Rising Star

February 12th, 2012

If you look at London born model Betty Adewole’s biography, you will see that Betty mentions skateboarding as her hobby. This photo was taken at the start of Betty’s modelling career, back in October 2009. I had seen Betty before at London shows earlier that year, so when I spotted her skateboarding on a quiet London backstreet, I had to capture the moment. Recently Betty has appeared on the cover of Cafe Volt Magazine’s for their avant-garde and colourful fashion feature’ tribal masquerade’.

Jamaica – Caymanas Park – Race Track

February 11th, 2012

Here’s a photo of Jamaican Jockeys, resting between races, taken from a series I shot in Jamaica, at Caymanas Park in Kingston. Caymanas Park is Jamaica’s only horse racing track and racing started there in 1959, but there is a history of horse racing in Jamaica which goes back to the early 19th century and by 1967 several smaller tracks could be found dotted all around the island.

The 1970s and 80s were lean years for the racing industry but following a string of changes, Caymanas Park race track has become more popular than ever, attracting crowds of up to 12,500-the core of its success coming from the use of off-track betting, which you can find all over Jamaica.

I started photographing at Caymanas Park in the1980′s. I was not so interested in the actual racing itself, which is much the same as anywhere else. It was the characters at the track which made the atmosphere special for me – the young boys who collect empty bottles for a few Jamaican dollars, the punters, the couples, the owners, the trainers and especially the jockeys, featured here.

Of the many characters and stories at Caymanas park race track, the man known as shady, must rank as one of the most colourful and cheeky. He gives winning tips on every horse in the race to different people and collects money from the jubilant winner! If you would like to see more from this series, go to Reportage.org

London – Longway To Tipperary

February 10th, 2012

Hazel is a fashion student from Limerick, Ireland. I just loved Hazel’s homemade, mix & match all-wool jacket . Hazel was on her way to Hampstead for an internship interview with a fashion designer, when I spotted her in Bloomsbury. Hazel made the jacket for a college project and the wool was sourced from Tipperary.

London – Florienne

February 1st, 2012

Out and about yesterday with Tom Lamont the commissioning editor of Observer New Review. In the lead up to LFW, Tom was writing a piece about how to become a Street Style photographer, and Style Bubble Girl Susie Lau had suggested my name, so I was more than happy to oblige Tom on his quest. I will keep you posted, but you should be able to read about it in the Observer this sunday. Here a couple of my shots from the day. Florienne is a model with the Storm model agency and had come over from France for a casting. I spotted Florienne shortly after Tom and I had stepped out of the cab and quickly explained the project to her. I decided it was best for me to take the initial shots, as this was Toms first taste of Street Style Photography and he had a borrowed camera from the Observer picture desk. I then coached Tom as best I could and got Florienne to move and pose differently for his shot. It all happened  very fast and Tom said he felt  a rush of adrenaline and found his first ever encounter with Street Style vey exciting. You can read Toms piece and see his photos in Observer New Review, this Sunday…
